The only rabbit to be widely domesticated is the Oryctolagus cuniculus which orginated in southwest Europe. They were first raised in ancient Rome. Later during medival times, a more diverse variety of domestic rabbit breeds were developed.
Domestic rabbits, aka "bunnies" or house rabbits, are very social animals and there are humans who love them as pets or animal companions. They are soft to the touch. They don't hunt other pets in a household. They are very cute. House rabbits love to run, jump, and play. They are alert, though timid, creatures, perhaps not the brightest pet around--becuse they frequently chew on electric cords. Some people adore bunnies; others find them annoying.
Thus, in contemporary society, little bunny rabbits symbolize small, furry, cute, harmless critters, who are sometimes not very smart.
This little animal is from whence the metaphore about "fluffy bunny" Wiccans and Neo-Pagans is drawn. Thus, the metaphor indicated "fluffy bunny" Wiccans and Neo-Pagans are cute and harmless Wiccans and Neo-Pagans who may not be quite as smart as others would like.
