"For a religion so opposed to Paganism, you sure stole a lot of our stuff!" The cartoon drawing may orginate in the 1980's, because I think I remember seeing it for sale back then. It's true that various pre-Christian Pagan religions did have incence, candles, cups for libations, baked holiday breads, before the Western Chritian Church used them as symbols. Yet, it seems the custom of a whole cut-down evergreen tree which was decorated for a mid winter holiday did orginate in the 16th or 17th century and was orginally a Christian custom. |
