Four Seals of the Spirits of the Four Elements

These four seals are from the Sixth and Sevenh Book of Moses. In hoodoo tradition such seals were often copied by practitioner onto brown paper. The seals may then be carried upon the person concealed in a mojo bag. That is interesting as these seals could now be easily reproduced in the size of modern day business cards.

They are grouped together because they involve the four elements. In the Sixth and Sevenh Book of Moses, the four elements of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, are ruled over by the four angels, Tharsis, Cherub, Ariel, and Seruph.

If you come from a Neo-Pagan background, please do not assume that these seals can be used as something akin to a "hoodoo-style" calling of the quarters while casting a circle. If anything, other forms of Afro-American spiritual systems often mark direction by moving in a special traditional cross-shaped pattern, rather than walking in a circle. For example, one may face the directions in the following order: 1 East direction, 2 West direction, 3 North direction, 4 South direction. Other forms of Afro-American spiritual systems might not bother with this movement in a special traditional cross-shaped pattern at all--but rather usually face East for any work, or only do some specific action towards a direction (e.g. pour something out towards the North end of your property) when the specific work required it.

In any case, a careful reading of this material reveals that there is no indication that the four seals are ever intended to be used together.

The First Table of the Spirits of the Air.

These are the holy names of this seal: Jehovah, Father, Deus, Shaddai, Schaddai, Deus, Adonai, Elohe, Eead, Adonai.

"Jehovah, Father, Deus, Adonai, Elohe, I cite thee through Jehovah. Deus, Shaddai, Eead, I conjure thee through Adonai."

If carried upon the person, the First Table of the Spirits of the Air, who are as quick to help as thought, will relieve the wearer from all necessity.

The Second Table of the Spirits of Fire.
Fire

These are the holy names and words of this seal: Aha, Tetragrammaton, Ehye Asher Eyeh, Ihiros, Athah Gabor Leolah, Adonai, AGLA, You, Lord, Are Mighty Forever, Aysch, Ache, Jehovah.

"Aha I conjure thee, Tetragrammaton, Aha by Ehye Asher Eyeh, by Ihiros, Ehye Asher Eyeh, by AGLA, Aysch, Jehovah, conjure I thee, that thou appear unto me."

The Third Table of the Spirits of the Water.
Water

These are the holy names of this seal Chahanya, Yeschaijah, God, Tetragrammaton, Alpha et Omega, Eloh, Adonai.

"I call upon and command thee Chahanya by God, Tetragrammaton, Eloh, and thou art compelled through Adonai. I conjure thee, Yeschaijah, by Alpha et Omega, Eloh, and thou art compelled through Adonai."

The Third Table of the Spirits of the Water brings great fortune by water, and its spirits will amply supply the treasures of the deep.

The Fourth Table of the Spirits of the Earth.
Earth

These are the powerful words of this seal: Awijel, Awi-el, Agios, O Theos, Ahenatos, Holy God, Holy Strong, Holy Immortal, Sanctus Deus, Sanctus Fortis, Sanctus Immortális, Ahenatos, Elyon, Adon, Adonai; Agios O Theos, Agios Ischyros, Agios Athanatos, Eleison Imas; Kyrie Eleison; Elyon Sabaoth; Zebaoth.

"I, (name), command thee, Awijel, by O Theos as also by Elmez through Agios. I, (name), a servant of God, conjure thee, Ahenatos Elijon, as also Adon was cited and called Sabaoth."

This Fourth Table will give the treasures of the earth, if it be laid in the earth. Its spirits will give the treasures of earth at all times.

William Alexander Oribello in his book The Sealed Magical Book Of Moses 1986, talismanic seals involve "pure communication with a sincere heart" (p38). There are several steps involved in using talismanic seals.

According to Oribello, talismanic seals must be "activated" by spoken prayer, holy water, three white candles, incense, and a holy bible.

Oribello suggested making one's own holy water with one teaspoon each of the following dried herbs, hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), sacred bark/cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) laurel (Laurus nobilis) into a one quart glass jar filled with spring or mineral water which is allowed to stand for 13 days. For incense, he suggested burning powdered sandalwood or Moses Incense.

The person should arrange these items on an altar that faces East. After lighting the candles and incense, and cleansing her/his hands with the holy water, s/he will anoint the four corners of the seal with holy water and set it on the bible. The talismanic seals may then be "activated" by the spoken word.

Accordong to Oribello, these talismanic seals are specifically activated by the names of the four angelic spirits who rule over the four elements of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

After someone has actvated the power of the seal, Oribello suggested that s/he write her/his name "____child of ____" on the back of the seal to direct its focus. A person may carry the seal on her/his person. Many people will keep the seal in a red flannel bag or wrap it in a white hankerchief.

As Oribello's book was published in the mid 1980's, he offered a wholly modern suggestion. After the the seals were actvated, one's name inscribed, one could laminate the seal--thus sealing the talismanic seals in laminating plastic which may be purchased at a local stationery store. Oribello explained, "This will protect them from wear and soiling with the passing of time. It is also wise to re-apply the holy water to the four corners of each seal every month to keep them blessed with the high rate of vibration you generated when first activating it." (p. 38) Seals that are not carried on one's person can be kept in a private place tucked way out of sight, perhaps discretely placed in the bible used only in one's private spiritual practice.
