Useful Prayers

Many folk magic systems, especially magico-religious systems, sometimes borrow from the larger mainstream religions. A cross pollinization of religous motifs and iconography is not uncommon as systems of religious thought coexist. The phenomenon is well known to historians and anthropologists.

The folk magic practices of Italy were heavily influenced by the religious rituals of the Roman Catholic Church. Some practitioners of Stregheria sometimes use Catholic prayers in their traditions. Other streghe simply do not.

Originally I had not planned to record any specifically Christian material on this website. After all, I don't use it, and anyone can easily look up Ave Maria or the Credo if he or she wanted to reference this material.

Eventually I decided that it might be a good idea to have some frequently used prayers available for easy access. Yet this is not an orthodox list by any standards. Some of these prayers are not necessarily used a lot in the streghe's tradition. However, I have included them because they seemed particularly well suited for use and because they are beautiful devotions.

Salve Regina

Hail, holy queen,
Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry, as children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
Mourning and weeping in this veil of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy toward us,
Lead us home at last.
Show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O Clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

My Sovereign Lady

O Holy Mary , my sovereign Lady, into your blessed trust and special custody, and into the heart of your mercy, I, this day and every day, and in the hour of my death, commend my whole being. To you I commit all my hope and happiness, all my cares and concerns and my whole life, that, through your most holy intercession and through your merits, all my actions may be guided and governed according to your will and that of your divine Son. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Candelaria

Blessed Lady of Candelaria, Mother of God, who appeared on the island of Tenerife, to show  the world the greatest proof of love, while kindness reigned. Although I am as a gentile Guanche, I beg for your protection, trusting that without deserving the name of your son/daughter, you will, as always, treat me like a Mother; receive my affection, as you accepted those Guanche and receive my prayers, as you heard those of the gentiles , abating the just ire of God until the Divine Light shines upon my soul, under the influence of your radiant light, grant me and send to me what I ask for in this prayer, covering me, like a good Mother, with the aromatic garments of your virtues, so that in receiving the first-born blessing from your divine Son the first sinners from so much good may you be perfectly praised in these days, often repeating with San Gabriel the Archangel your angelic salutation: (Recite 3 Hail Mary’s) (state your request) Amen

--Catholic prayer on a prayer candle.

Devotion to Our Lady of Candelaria or Virgen de la Candelaria originated in Tenerife in Spain. This title of the Madonna derived from candlestick or candle, symbolizing the holy light guiding the faithful to the right path and redemption. In iconography of the Virgen de la Candelaria, she is sometimes holding a candle as well as her Divine Son. According to the liturgical calendar, this Marian feast is celebrated on February 2.  February 2 also marks the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, on the liturgical calendar.  Likewise, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple also falls on the date of February 2.

Our Lady of Candelaria is the patron saint of the Canary Islands (Spain), located just off the southern coast of Morocco. This prayer in English, due to the term “gentile Guanche,” probably originated in the Canary Islands.

Virgen de la Candelaria Prayer

Virgen de la Candelaria, our mother to taking the child to present in the temple.  We come to you with the trust and simplicity of children. We arrived with our anxieties and hopes, our joys and sorrows, with the fatigue of work and the weight of our sins; with all that we are and have. Virgen de la Candelaria, You are the first carrier of Light, which is Christ; You are our Mother; You wrangling us with Christ the Saviour; You are our hope, comfort and joy; You accompany us in the city, the desert, the valleys, the mines, and the sea; You are our star on the way to the Father; You are our footpath to meet Jesus.

Virgen de la Candelaria, Virgin Mother of God, hear our prayers, bless our homes, obtain for work and health; teach us to hear the word of your Son and to live it every day, obedient to the Holy Spirit.  We know to build a nation of brotherhood in our Church and in our land. Amen.

--Catholic prayer

Prayer to Virgen de la Candelaria for Overwhelming Problems

Dearest Virgen de la Candelaria, we meet with you in humility and hope because we know you love us, hear us, and give us light, at all times and needs--but especially when we are overwhelmed with problems.

We come today in trust, full of hope, with the simplicity of children, bringing our devotion, love, and prayers. Accept them beloved Holy Mother, and guide us from suffering.  Let us see your strengths and teach us to imitate those strenghts to make us better, so that we resemble you more each day, to please the Lord as you did and so live in peace and love and joy and eventually share with you the eternal bliss and celestial light.

Immaculate Virgin of Candelaria, give us your blessing. Have mercy, Lord, and keep in perfect peace those are steadfast, because they trust in you. Those come to you with trust and expectation in that Cause of Our Salvation, we receive the treasure of heaven, with a maternal caress.

Oh Madonna, our hope, our refuge and our help, our safety, our clarity of sight, our footpath, our attentive mother who guards and guides us--we pray you be our Consolation, our blessed Mediatrix with the Lord, and that you will help us achieve our solutions to our problems.

Our Lady of the Candelaria, blessed above all creatures, today we pray your soul is with us. We implore and beg you to reach your beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Deliver us, Lord, from all dangers. Keep us from our enemies, sickness, and evil. And grant us help out of this difficult situation that overwhelms the mind with anxiety, causing suffering.

(State your request)

Oh Virgin of Candelaria, we thank you our mother and our lady. Aware of our weaknesses, we come to you. We are your children and we put in your hands our prayers and petitions that through your powerful intercession our request(s) will be granted.  Do not leave us without your protection and maternal care. May we be educated through you that we be made true children of God.

Beloved Madonna, make us supreme by keeping Christ in our hearts, so one day you can present us to God as during the presentation in the temple. Amen.

(Pray seven Hail Mary’s, seven Our Father’s, and seven Glory Be’s; this prayer should be recited with devotion three days in a row.)

--Catholic prayer

Our prayers exalt our Lady, beloved of all the earth.
(Recite 1 Hail Mary.)
Deliver us, our Mother, from all dangers, especially wind storms, hail, and everlasting death.
(Recite 1  Hail Mary.)
Have mercy, Lord, we trust in you, you are the gate of salvation.
(Recite 1 Hail Mary.)
Oh, Mother of the Light of the World, our hope, our refuge and our help, guide us to Jesus with your candle.

Prayer to Our Lady of Consolation

Oh Heavenly Mother I come to you today; draw me closer to your Divine Son, Jesus. I humbly ask for your help, protection and your guidence. With a heart full of gratitude, I thank you for all of your past joys and consolations. Holy Mary Mother of Consolation Prayer

Holy Mary Mother of Consolation, I take refuge in thy most loving heart with all the confidence of which I am capable; thou shalt be the dearest object of my love and veneration. To thee, who art the dispenser of the treasures of Heaven, I shall always have recourse in my sorrows to have peace, in my doubts to have light, in my dangers to be defended, in all my needs to obtain thy assistance. At the hour of my death, graciously receive my last breaths and obtain for me a place in thy heavenly home.

Mother Mary, Comforter of the afflicted, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

--Catholic prayer

In the USA, the Feast Day for Our Lady of Consolation is held the Saturday after the Feast of St. Augustine (August 28). (There are different dates in different countries. In Reggio Calabria, is is celebrated on the second Saturday in September.)

O Full of Grace

All Creation rejoices in you,
O Full of Grace,
The archangels and the race of men,
O Sanctified Temple and Spiritual
Paradise, the Glory of Virgins;
From whom God was incarnate
and became a child, our God
through the ages.
He made your body into a throne.
And your womb he made more
spacious than the heavens.
All creation rejoices in you,
O Full of Grace, glory to you!

--Eastern Orthodox Liturgy

Glory to you...

Glory to you for the feast day of life.
Glory to you for the perfume of lillies and roses.
Glory to you for each different taste of berry and fruit.
Glory to you for the sparkling silver of early morning dew.
Glory to you for the joy of dawn's awakening.
Glory to you for the new life each day brings.

Madonna del Carmine

Oh, Lady of Carmine! Who with special goodness and mercy
consider those who are devoted to you,
send me a vision and cover me with your cloak,
give me strength,
enlighten the darkness of my understanding throughout this life,
console me at the hour of my death
and present me before God as his devoted child and your servant. Amen.

On July 16, the feast of the Virgin of Carmine or Madonna del Carmine, candles are lit to request healing. In Naples, the fiesta celebrations involve fireworks from the Madonna del Carmine Church. Apparently elsewhere in Italy this feast day has a maritime connection. In Sicily, the "Madonna del Carmen" is allegedly the famous statue of the Madonna holding a female infant.

Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel/Madonna del Carmine

O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein that you are my Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me herein that you are my Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us that have recourse to thee. (3 times)

Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times). Amen.

(This prayer is repeated for 3 consecutive days. When a request is granted a petitioner should publically share or publish this prayer in a public forum and thank the Madonna.)

Prayer to Beata Vergine del Monte Carmelo

Oh, most holy Virgin of Carmel, pray for me to the Lord who, shinning brighter than the sun, excels in beauty the fairest things of the earth. Strengthen me in the brightest image of His Beauty, that I will dwell in His Light in this life and I may behold Him and you eternally in the life to come. Amen.

Prayer to La Santissima Madonna del Carmine

La Santissima Madonna del Carmine, purest Virgin, who gave birth to our Lord, Savior of the World. Source of goodness, light in the darkness of our lives, I come to you with confidence and trust, and ask for your holy intercesstion for my needs. I request this special favor of God Omnipotent. I sincerly seek to follow your Most Holy example, accepting in faith all that the Lord chooses for me. Amen.
[Recite the Magnificat, followed by Glory be.]
--Catholic folk prayer

The Magnificat

My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath helped his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Amen.
--Luke 1:46-55
[Recite Glory be.]

Ecclesiasticus 24:28-81

As the vine, I have brought forth a pleasant odor, and my flowers are the fruit of honor and riches. I am the mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope. In me is all grace of the way and of the truth; in me is all hope of life and of virtue. Come over to me, all ye that desire me, and be filled with my fruits. For my spirit is sweet above honey, and my inheritance above honey and the honeycomb My memory is unto everlasting generations. They that eat me shall yet hunger; and they that drink me, shall yet thirst. He that hearkeneth to me shall not be confounded; and they that work by me shall not sin. They that explain me shall have life everlasting.
--Epistle to honor the Madonna on July 16, the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Madonna del Carmen (Mt Carmel is said to be the site of a shrine to Ephesian Diana, before that to Isis, and before that to Inanna/Ishtar. It was renowned for its healing practices through dream incubation.)

O Holy Root, O Living Root...

O holy root, O living root, O flower, O fruitful vine; light of the earth and brightness of heaven, thou outshinest the sun in splendor; present us to thy Son, that He judge us not sternly. In presence of the Most High King, be mindful of the little flock, which, though it has transgressed the law given it, dares to hope for pardon; be mindful, O Mother of God, when thou standest in the sight of thy Son, to speak good things for us, that He may turn away his anger from thy children. Amen.

She is the Flower

She is the flower, the violet,
the blossoming rose
that gives out such a scent to
satisfy us all...

--Gautier De Coincy, 13th century

Blessed Sister, Holy Mother...

Blessed sister, holy mother, spirit of the fountain, spirit of the garden
Suffer us not to mock ourselves with falsehood
Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still
Even among these rocks,
Our peace in His will
And even among these rocks
Sister, mother,
And spirit of the river, spirit of the sea,
Suffer me not to be separated

And let my cry come unto Thee.

--T. S. Eliot. Although this is not a traditional prayer, I thought this brief except from the prayer, Ash Wednesday, was especially suitable for the Madonna.

O Love...

O love, O pure deep love, be here,
   be now
Be all; worlds dissolve into your
   stainless, endless radiance,
Frail living leaves burn within you
   brighter than cold stars:
Make me your servant, your breath,
   your core.
--Jelaluddin Rumi, brief excerpt from When Grapes Turn to Wine

Come, True Light...

Come, true light.
Come, eternal life.
Come, hidden mystery.
Come, treasure without name.
Come, rejoicing without end.
Come, light that knows no evening.
Come, raising of the fallen.
Come, resurection of the dead.
Come, for you are yourself the desire that is within me.
Come, my breath and my life.
Come, the consolation of my humble soul.
Come, my joy, my glory, my endless delight.

Mother of Sorrows, Mother of Love

Good day, O Lady and Mother, with filial affection I come to offer as I am and what I have: My eyes to look at you, my voice to bless, my heart to love, and my life to serve you.

Accept, Mother, this gift which offers you my love. Keep me as a child, close to your Heart. Bless me and smile back in consistency with the love that it delivers to me without penalty. I give thanks for the affectionate vigil. Despise not another love which compliments you, dear Mother. Lead me to the altar, and from your pure hands I want to receive the Holy Communion.

I love you sweet Morning Star shining in the difficult journey of my life, which I entirely consecrate to you, and to the memory of your bitter pains and sorrows which pierce you like a sword.

To you, Queen of all Martyrs, I offer my work ... my toil ... my sorrows; burning as clouds of mystic incense, I let them rise to you. And while I am pierced/stabbed with my own pains, make these as a crucifix offering, that I know to be your Son and I also feel that you are my Mother. You, dear Mother, save our souls and give us all to Jesus, in order to satisfy the desires of his Heart.

In joy and in sorrow, in my life and in my agony, look with compassion. Do not leave me, my Mother. My sweet Mother, to you I give my suffering--it is all yours, nothing more than my own. Mary, Mother of sorrows, Mother of love, pray for me. Amen.

Novena Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ

Divine Jesus, You have said, "Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you." Behold me kneeling at Your feet, filled with a lively faith and confidence in the promises dictated by Your Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary. I come to ask this favor: [State petition].

To whom can I turn if not to You, Whose Heart is the source of all graces and merits? Where should I seek if not in the treasure which contains all the riches of Your kindness and mercy? Where should I knock if not at the door through which God gives Himself to us and through which we go to God? I have recourse to You, Heart of Jesus. In You I find consolation when afflicted, protection when persecuted, strength when burdened with trials, and light in doubt and darkness.

Dear Jesus, I firmly believe that You can grant me the grace I implore, even though it should require a miracle. You have only to will it and my prayer will be granted. I admit that I am most unworthy of Your favors, but this is not a reason for me to be discouraged. You are the God of mercy, and You will not refuse a contrite heart. Cast upon me a look of mercy, I beg of You, and Your kind Heart will find in my miseries and weakness a reason for granting my prayer.

Sacred Heart, whatever may be Your decision with regard to my request, I will never stop adoring, loving, praising, and serving You. My Jesus, be pleased to accept this my act of perfect resignation to the decrees of Your adorable Heart, which I sincerely desire may be fulfilled in and by me and all Your creatures forever.

Grant me the grace for which I humbly implore You through the Immaculate Heart of Your most sorrowful Mother. You entrusted me to her as her child, and her prayers are all-powerful with You. Amen.

Prayers to St. Joseph

Prayer to St. Joseph

O Glorious St. Joseph, thou wert chosen by God to be the reputed Father of Jesus, the most pure Spouse of Mary ever Virgin and the Head of the Holy Family. Thou hast been chosen by Christ's Vicar as the heavenly Patron and Protector of the Church founded by Christ. Therefore, with the greatest confidence I implore thy powerful assistance for the whole Church militant. Protect, in a special manner, with true fatherly love, the sovereign Pontiff and all the bishops and priests in communion with the See of Peter. Be the protector of all who labor for souls amidst the trials and tribulations of this life; and grant that all nations of the earth may submit with docility to that Church out of which there is no salvation.

Dearest St. Joseph, accept the offering I now make of myself to thee. I dedicate myself to thy service, that thou mayest ever be my Father, my Protector and my Guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me great purity of heart and a fervent love for the interior life. Grant that after thy example, all my actions may be directed to the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary and thy own paternal heart. Finally, pray for me, that I may share in the peace and joy of thy holy death. Amen.

O Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.

O Saint Joseph, assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your heavenly power I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

O Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath Saint Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for us. Amen.

Prayer to Saint Joseph, Patron of Workers

Glorious Saint Joseph, you are the pattern of all who work. Obtain for me, please, the grace to work conscientiously and to put devotion to duty before my selfish inclinations. Help me to labor in thankfulness and joy, for it is an honor to employ and to develop by my labor the gifts I have received from almighty God. Grant that I may work in orderliness, peace, moderation and patience without shrinking from weariness and difficulties. I offer my fatigue and perplexities as reparation for sin. I shall work, above all, with a pure intention and with detachment from self, having always before my eyes the hour of death and the accounting which I must then render of time ill-spent, of talents unemployed, of good undone, and of empty pride in success, which is so fatal to the work of God. For Jesus through Mary, all in imitation of you, good Saint Joseph. This shall be my motto in life and in death. Amen.

Dear St. Joseph, You were yourself once faced with the responsibility of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary. Look down with Fatherly compassion upon me in my anxiety over my present inability to support my family. Please help me to find gainful employment very soon, so that this heavy burden of concern will be lifted from my heart, and that I am soon able to provide for those whom God has entrusted to my care. Help us to guard against bitterness and discouragement so that we may emerge from this trial spiritually enriched and with even greater blessing from God. [Now say 1 decade of the Marian Rosary]

Prayer For Speedy Recovery Following Surgery

Heavenly Father, I thank you for bringing me safely through this surgery and for the many doctors and medical staff that were involved in my operation. Thank you Lord for being with me and with the family as I faced this time in hospital and thank you Lord that your everlasting arms are ever underneath to uphold and support each one of us through these difficult seasons of life.

Father I ask that you would give me a speedy and safe recovery--help me to be patient, should my recovery not be as quick as I would like it to be but may it also be a time when I learn to rest in your love. Oh, but Lord, I do thank you that you have promised that our times are in your hands and I know that you overshadow every aspect of our lives. Lord, I pray that during this time of convalescence that you would give me a peace that comes only from you – and keep me from fretting about my inability to do as much as when I am in full health and strength.

Lord you know that I am generally quite busy and often find that I arrive at the end of the day having had little quality time with you--but I pray, with all my heart, that this time of recovery would be a time when I draw closer to you than I have ever drawn before.. I ask this is the name of Jesus, my Lord and Saviour, in whose name I pray.
Amen.

St. Catherine of Siena Prayers

Prayer to Saint Catherine of Siena, Patroness of Italy

O Saint Catherine, thou lily of virginity and rose of charity who didst adorn the garden of Saint Dominic, heroine of Christian zeal who wast chosen like Saint Francis to be the special Patron of Italy, to thee we have recourse with confidence, invoking thy mighty protection upon ourselves and upon the whole Church of Christ, thy Beloved, in whose Heart thou didst drink of the inexhaustible fountain of all grace and all peace for thee and for the world. From that Divine Heart thou didst draw the living water of virtue and concord in families, of upright conduct in young people, of union among the discordant nations, of renewal of public morality and of brotherly love, which is compassionate and benevolent towards the unfortunate and suffering, and didst teach us by thy example how to unite the love of Christ with the love of country.

If thou lovest the land of Italy and its people entrusted to thee, if pity for us moves thee, if that tomb is dear to thee in which Rome venerates and honors thy virginal remains, oh! graciously turn thine eyes and thy favor upon our pain and upon our prayer, and fulfill our desires.

Defend, assist, and comfort thy fatherland and the world. Under thy protection and thy guidance be the sons and daughters of Italy, our hearts and our minds, our labors and our hopes, our faith and our love; that faith and that love which formed thy very life and made thee the living image of Christ crucified in thy intrepid zeal for His Spouse, Holy Church.

O heroic and holy messenger of union and peace for the Church of Christ, thou who didst restore the successor of Peter to the Apostolic Roman See in the splendor of its authority and teaching office, protect and console him in his paternal and universal solicitude, in his anxious cares and in his counsels for the salvation and the tranquillity of the peoples of the earth; revive, preserve, and increase in us and in all faithful Christians, O heavenly Patroness, the affection and the filial submission which thou didst cherish for him and for the fold of Christ in a world at peace. Amen.

[When it had been recited daily for a month, this prayer carried an indulgence of 500 days.]

Saint Catherine of Siena Prayer

O admirable Saint Catherine, thou who didst merit to make of thy whole life the noblest holocaust, constantly inspiring thyself to a most ardent love for Jesus, the Lamb without blemish, and for His beloved Spouse the Church, whose rights thou didst strenuously affirm and support in troubled times, obtain, likewise, for us the grace not only to pass unscathed through the corruption of this world, but also to remain unshakably faithful to the Church, in word, in deed, in example, to see always, and to make others see, in the Vicar of Christ our anchor, as it were, in the storms of life, the beacon light that points the way to the harbor of safety in the dark night of our times and of men's souls.

Prayer to St. Catherine of Siena, Patroness Against Miscarriage

St. Catherine of Siena, humble virgin, in thirty-three years you achieved great perfection and became the counselor of popes. There are dangers in pregnancy. Pray for my well-being during pregnancy. Intercede for me that I may avoid miscarriage and bring forth a healthy baby who will become a true child of God. Amen.

[If a man offers this prayer, he should amend it to: "Pray for my wife's well-being during pregnancy. Intercede for us that she may avoid miscarriage and bring forth a healthy baby, who will become a true child of God. I vow to love and care for this child as a responsible father. Amen.]

Prayer to St. Simon of Cyrene

Good Saint, tradition says that you were raised on a farm.
If so, you knew what it meant to toil in the fields each day.
You were grateful to the Lord of the harvest
when He blessed your work with abundant crops.
And you did not lose your trust in Him
when He limited His blessings,
giving you only a small return for your labors.

And our good Lord blessed you,
choosing you personally to help Him carry His cross to Calvary.

Oh! powerful St. Simon, I humbly come to you.
Let your strong spirit help me in all actions
and in any travail necessary. I offer you drink,
bread or other fruits of the harvest, and a candle
for your intercession that any trouble
causing anguish or suffering of physical or mental hardship
be removed and forgotten in the name of the one
for whom you carried the cross and for whom
thirty coins were given to the poor.
Amen.

Another Prayer to St. Valentine

Dear Lord, who art high in the Heavens,
Giver of Love and Passion,
And He who strings the heart’s cords,
Lead the Lovers this day, February ten plus four.
The day during the month of two,
When the date is the perfect number of God
Greater two souls and two hearts.
Some Loves are fleeting,
But that which is built on you will never fail.
So guide the Lovers to know what is to be.
Your truths the Lovers’ mouths should speak,
For Your truth is that which is honest to the heart.
Only this, then, should pass over the red lips of the Lovers.
Your art, the Lovers simply a medium.
It is only with True Hearts that You can create a Masterpiece,
So let the Lovers remember that their Soul’s Desire
Is the one for which You light their Fire.
And let it be You who creates the Art of the Lovers;
The art of two into one. Amen.

St. Cajetan Prayers

Prayer to St. Cajetan for Job Seekers and the Unemployed

Glorious Saint Cajetan, acclaimed by all people to be father of providence because you provide miraculous aid to all who come to you in need, I stand here before you today, asking that you present to the Lord the requests that I confidently deposit in your hands.

(Mention here the graces desired.)

May these graces that I now request help me to always seek the Kingdom of God and his Righteousness, knowing that God--who dresses with beauty the flowers of the field and abundantly feeds the birds of the sky--will give me all other things. Amen.

(Try praying this novena style for nine days straight, then after each prayer recite 3 Our Father’s, 3 Hail Mary’s and 3 Glory Be’s.)

(If this prayer has in any way been answered, please don’t forget to Thank God for His Grace and St. Cajetan for his intercession. Please also do your part by spreading this prayer around in honor of St. Cajetan. If you want to do more, then try anonymous acts of charity in order to share your blessings. St. Cajetan Novena for the Unemployed

Opening Prayer to St. Cajetan: O glorious St. Cajetan, you studied to be a lawyer, but when you felt that the Lord was calling you to his service, you abandoned everything and became a priest. You excelled in virtues, shunning all material rewards for your labor, helping the many unemployed people of your time. You provided loans without interest and you attracted a lot of benefactors who donated to your resources so that you could go on with your activities. Look on us with mercy. We wish to find employment that could help us and our families live with dignity. Listen to our petitions, dear saint; you, who could easily give up the food on your table for the needy, bring our petitions to Jesus. Amen

[Choose One or More Prayers of Intercession]

1# Prayer of Intercession: Loving Father, in praying for the unemployed we think especially of those who through no fault of their own have lost their jobs and are now searching for other work for the sake of their families.

May they not grow despondent or come to regard themselves as useless.

St. Cajetan, pray for us. Christ, hear our prayers.

2# Prayer of Intercession: The fear of unemployment looms around my life and my soul. The work that provides my livelihood and makes it possible for me to care for those I love is now absent. I worry that I won't be able to find another job.

I worry that I won't be able to do what gives me meaning. I worry that with so many out of work, my search for a new position will be useless. Most of all, I worry that I will become hopeless in this world.

Please let me trust in your endless and abundant provision. Remind me that your caring eye is upon me and that heaven's hand and heart are open wide to my need. Fill me with the hope that alone will help me through this time of difficulty and lead me to new work that fills my heart with joy.

St. Cajetan, pray for us. Christ, hear our prayers.

3# Prayer of Intercession: Loving Father, you who rejoices in both our work and our play, we come before you, unemployed, afraid, and shaken in my trust. When we lose courage and hope while searching for work, be our rock of safety. When we find it hard to believe in my talents, revive in us an appreciation of the gifts you have given to each of us. When we begin to doubt our worth, help us to remember that I do not need to earn your love. When our fears take hold and start to overwhelm us, let us find comfort in your care for us and for those we love. Thank you for all those who continue to support and encourage us during this difficult time. May it somehow bring us closer to one another and to you.

St. Cajetan, pray for us. Christ, hear our prayers.

4# Prayer of Intercession: We pray for the courage to do your will while we seek employment. We ask that you keep us calm and patient so that we may know your will for each of us. We pray for the strength to keep our motivations high during this journey. We ask for the determination to keep moving forward to do my part of this search. We pray that we maintain a continued faith that God will move the mountains that might be in front of us. We pray for ceaseless hope as we interact with others in the world. We trust that God is with us during all my interactions with employment concerns.

St. Cajetan, pray for us. Christ, hear our prayers.

Closing Prayer: Jesus Christ, You wanted all who are weary to come to You for support. Lord, I am worn out by my inability to find work. Guide my steps to a righteous path; give me the patience to find opportunities with a future. Calm my worries and fears as my financial responsibilities mount. Strengthen my resolve; embolden my heart to open doors; Open my eyes to see life beyond rejections.

Help me believe in me.

Let me realize other ways to bring about Your kingdom on earth. Let me grow as a person that I may be worthy for Your greater glory.

Amen.

--Catholic Prayer

St. Cajetan Prayer for the Unemployed

Heavenly Father, giver of every opportunity, please help all who are searching for employment during these very challenging times. You gave work to humankind as a gift and a way to grow in virtue and grace. Any diligent work offered in service to You can be a path to holiness, and help build up Your Kingdom.

Lord, please give renewed hope to all the unemployed and sustain them in these difficult times. By the prayers and holy example of Saint Cajetan, partron of all job seekers, encourage all those looking for work to persevere and grow in deeper trust of Your unfailing care for them. Increase in them O Lord the gifts of ingenuity, courage and persistence. Through the intercession of St. Cajetan, help all the unemployed find dignified work and a secure living wage. During this time of seeking, may they come to realize that You are all they ever really had, and You are all they ever really needed. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Patrick Prayers

Lorica, or the Breastplate of Saint Patrick/San Patrizio or the Cry of the Deer

I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, through belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation.

I arise today through the strength of Christ with His Baptism, through the strength of His Crucifixion with His Burial through the strength of His Resurrection with His Ascension, through the strength of His descent for the Judgment of Doom.

I arise today through the strength of the love of Cherubim in obedience of Angels, in the service of the Archangels, in hope of resurrection to meet with reward, in prayers of Patriarchs, in predictions of Prophets, in preachings of Apostles, in faiths of Confessors, in innocence of Holy Virgins, in deeds of righteous men.

I arise today, through the strength of Heaven: light of Sun, brilliance of Moon, splendour of Fire, speed of Lightning, swiftness of Wind, depth of Sea, stability of Earth, firmness of Rock.

I arise today, through God's strength to pilot me: God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me, God's host to secure me: against snares of devils, against temptations of vices, against inclinations of nature, against everyone who shall wish me ill, afar and anear, alone and in a crowd.

I summon today all these powers between me (and these evils): against every cruel and merciless power that may oppose my body and my soul, against incantations of false prophets, against black laws of heathenry, against false laws of heretics, against craft of idolatry, against spells of women and smiths and wizards, against every knowledge that endangers man's body and soul. Christ to protect me today against poison, against burning, against drowning, against wounding, so that there may come abundance of reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ in breadth, Christ in length, Christ in height, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, through belief in the Threeness, through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of Christ. May Thy Salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.

Remember, O Lord, our friends and relatives who wait in the hope of resurrection to eternal life, and all who have departed this earth. Forgive them their sins which they have committed by deed, word, or intention. Give them rest and peace and strength in a refreshing place where there is neither sickness, nor sadness, nor sighing, and where the light of Your countenance shines and gladdens all forever. O Christ, rest in the souls of your servants with the saints. O God, you have authority over life and death. We pray to You for the eternal life of Your servants. Heal the sorrows of those who are left to mourn. Grant unto us all that we may be counted in the number of the company of Your Saints in the everlasting kingdom of God. This we ask through the Risen Christ, your Son and our Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer in Remembrance for Those who have Died

We pray to Thee, God of mercy, to remember the souls of Thy servants departed who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, grandparents, relatives, friends, and community elders; of those who, when living, were members of our circle and our larger community, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this community, proved their claim to our grateful and kind remembrance. To these, dear God, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Guardian Angels and Protection

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

Glorious Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly hosts, who stands always ready to give assistance to the people of God; who fought with the dragon, the old serpent, and cast him out of heaven, and now valiantly defends the Church of God that the Adversary may never prevail against her, I earnestly entreat you to assist me also, in the painful and dangerous conflict which I sustain against the same formidable foe. Be with me, O mighty Prince! that I may courageously fight and vanquish that proud spirit, whom you, by the Divine Power, gloriously overthrew, and whom our powerful King, Jesus Christ, has, in our nature, completely overcome; so having triumphed over the enemy of my salvation, I may with you and the holy angels, praise the clemency of God who, having refused mercy to the rebellious angels after their fall, has granted repentance and forgiveness to fallen man. Amen.

Police Officer's Prayer to Saint Michael

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional eyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgement.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil, that the police officer's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people. Amen.

A Prayer for Religious Tolerance in the USA

My God, I am so weary of the bickering in our Nation over religion.  The founders of the U.S.A. were very wise to create a separation of Church and State.  All our citizens have freedom of religion, and may embrace the Divine howsoever they choose to do--or choose not to do. Oh, if only, everyone understood that this right is in accordance with the providence of Spiritual Freedom, which rejects Tyranny. Our Nation’s constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion is critical in maintaining certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and  the pursuit of happiness.  Let us choose to reject the ligature of bigotry.

So I offer this short prayer—or sincere hope—for religious tolerance that the people in our Great Nation can live in peace and harmony with all creeds and religions in our United States of America. So be it. Amen.

--L. Woodling, July 4, 2017. [The founders of the USA were acutely aware of the Tyranny of religious persecution, which existed due to the conviction that a uniformity of religion must exist in any functioning society. Kings, queens, and princes were crowned in  churches and ecclesiastical powers bestowed the blessing of God upon these monarchs. Thus it was also believed that civil authorities had the duty to impose religious compliance on the population. Those who would not comply could expect little mercy. They were imprisoned and were often executed by the state as heretics. Religious persecution is often violent and implacable--and as such, it is remembered and resented for generations. The latest round of religious persecution began in the 16th century when Martin Luther introduced Protestantism.  In some areas, Catholic civil authorities persecuted Protestants because they were Protestant, in others Protestant civil authorities persecuted Catholics, because they were Catholic. At various times during  the 16th-18th centuries, Catholic civil authorities and Protestant civil authorities both persecuted anyone who was not quite being correct enough in her/his orthodoxy of creed or practice. England had finally renounced religious persecution in 1689, but persecution persisted on the European continent. The founders had seen the problems religious disputes had created across the Atlantic. ]

The Canticle of the Creatures

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,
All praise is Yours, all glory, honor and blessings.
To you alone, Most High, do they belong;
no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

We praise You, Lord, for all Your creatures,
especially for Brother Sun,
who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendor,
of You Most High, he bears your likeness.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Moon and the stars,
in the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

We praise You, Lord, for Brothers Wind and Air,
fair and stormy, all weather's moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Water,
so useful, humble, precious and pure.

We praise You, Lord, for Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night.
He is beautiful, playful, robust, and strong.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Earth,
who sustains us
with her fruits, colored flowers, and herbs.

We praise You, Lord, for those who pardon,
for love of You bear sickness and trial.
Blessed are those who endure in peace,
by You Most High, they will be crowned.

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape.
Woe to those who die in their sins!
Blessed are those that She finds doing Your Will.
No second death can do them harm.

We praise and bless You, Lord, and give You thanks,
and serve You in all humility.

Prayer for a Deeper Sense of Fellowship with All Living Things

O God, grant us a deeper sense of fellowship with all living this, our little brothers and sisters to whom in common with us you have given this earth as home. We recall with regret that in the past we have acted high-handedly and cruelly in exercising our domain over them. Thus, the voice of the earth which should have risen to you in song has turned into a groan of travail. May we realize that all these creatures also live for themselves and for you - not for us alone. They too love the goodness of life, as we do, and serve you better in their way than we do in ours. Amen.

Blessing of the Herbs on the Feast of the Assumption (August 15)

Almighty, eternal God, Thou created the heaven, earth, and the sea, all things visible and invisible. Thou hast ordained that the earth bring forth plants and trees for the use of men and animals; Thou hast decreed that each germinate according to its nature and bring forth fruit in due time, and Thou hast decreed that these plants should serve not only as food but as medicine in time of sickness. We humbly pray with heart and tongue that Thou wouldst bless these various herbs and plants and in Thy mercy grant a new blessing upon those powers that Thou hast caused to be inherent in these plants. May they, therefore, be a protection against all sickness and tribulation when we use them for man and beast in Thy name whose glorious Assumption we celebrate this day.

O God, who on this day didst raise the mother of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to the heights of heaven, we humbly pray Thee, that by her intercession and under her protection the fruit of her womb, Thy Son, might be given to us mortal men, that by the power of Thy Son and the protection of His glorious Mother graciously hear our prayers and pour forth the fullness of Thy blessing upon these fruits and herbs which we gratefully present this day before Thy altar.

Grant that, wherever these herbs be placed, they may be a potent means against sickness and pestilence, against the poison of serpents and the sting of poisonous animals, as also against the deceits, snares, and machinations of the devil. Grant that we may be worthy to be received with our sheaves of good works into heaven through the merits of the most Blessed Virgin Mary. Amen.

An Invocation of the Archangels

Before me stands the Archangel Michael
and the Apostle Matthew
to bear witness and protect.
On my right hand stands the Archangel Uriel
and the Apostle Mark
to bear witness and protect.
Behind me stands the Archangel Raphael
and the Apostle Luke
to bear witness and protect.
On my left hand stands the Archangel Gabriel
and the Apostle John
to bear witness and protect.

Italian folk magic is strongly influenced by Catholism. Indeed many traditional practioners grew up in households in which the Catholic devotions and prayers were intermixed with little spells or magico-religious practices.

This form of invoking the four archangels is only one of many forms. To my knowledge, it is not the exact method used by any Italian family tradition. I do know that some streghe do invoke the archangels for protection in prayers that are probably similar. Some modern streghe practioners invoke four grigori or watchers to guard their circle.

Acorrding to Thomas Heywood, The Hierarchy of the Blessed Angels, 1635, the "Angels of the Four Winds" are Michael over the east, Uriel over the south , Raphael over the west, and Gabriel over the north. The angels of the four elements are sometimes said to be Cherub over air, Seraph or Nathaniel over fire, Tharsis or Tharsus over water, and Auriel over earth. These angels, or archangels, of the winds and elements are often identified with the grigori in modern occultism.

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

--Numbers 6:24-26

Mdrash Psalms 4:9

Said the Holy One to Israel, "I have told you that when you pray, you should do so in the synagogue in your city. If you cannot pray in the synagogue, pray in your field. If you cannot pray in your field, pray in your house. If you cannot pray in your house, pray on your bed. If you cannot pray on your bed, meditate in your heart."

--Mdrash Psalms 4:9

As people of the Jewish faith have been persecuted--sometimes quite brutally (inquisition, pogroms)--for a number of centuries, they have gained some important wisdom about how to survive. Pray where you can and when you can. Pray with community and friends when possible. If it's not safe to meet with friends or community, pray in a field. Should it prove too dangerous to do that, pray quietly in your house or on your own bed. If it is not even possible to do that, meditate silently in your heart. What wonderful advice.
